Scents of Nostalgia
If I had to pick a season for the best smells, I would definitely have to say Autumn! I've made a rule (I'm really not sure why!) that I have to wait until September 1 to burn fall candles. It's a hard rule to stick to, though, because fall candles are amazing.
Scents and memories are so closely tied together; I can smell a candle and tell you a time of year/memory that goes with it. I bet you can, too!
I finally did a little research and here's the deal: of all our senses, smell is the one that brings back memories. Smell goes into the emotional and memory parts of the brain, whereas words go into thinking parts of the brain.
What are some of the fall scents that bring back memories for you? Every fall I burn the same candle; when my kids come home to visit, they say it reminds them of home. When I spray Febreeze, I think of our boys playing hockey in the fall. (Some smells even Febreeze can't help! Hahahaha!) Orange Clove candles make me think of Christmas Village. And when I make pumpkin muffins, my entire home smells delicious and reminds me of Thanksgiving with everyone in the kitchen.
I found a funny list of childhood smells. I wonder if you have similar memories from this list:
- A box of crayons
- Play-Doh
- Wet pavement after the rain
- A new doll
- Bonfire on a cold night
- Band-Aids
- Markers
- Baby Lotion
Time for some dialogue with you! What is your go-to scent that makes you happy? Is there a scent that immediately takes you back to an era in your life? We'd love to hear your funny comments.
